Which states have gained ground?
Between FY12 and FY24, Karnataka's share of all states' output rose the most, from 7.5% to 9.1%, and Maharashtra's fell the most, from 15.9% to 14.5%. 10 of the 19 larger states gained share.

Are the fast growers of the 2010s still the fast growers?
14 of the 19 states grew faster on average from FY23 to FY25 than from FY13 to FY20, partly because FY23 is measured against a year still recovering from the pandemic. The order changed more than the pace. From FY13 to FY20 the fastest were Karnataka (8.4%), Haryana (7.9%) and Madhya Pradesh (7.7%); from FY23 to FY25, Bihar (11.1%), Assam (10.7%) and Tamil Nadu (8.9%). The rank correlation between the two periods is 0.08, close to none: a state's growth in the 2010s says little about its growth since.
Growth before and after the pandemic, by state
Real GSDP growth, % a year, the average of FY13 to FY20 and of FY23 to FY25.
How to read it. Each dot is a state. If the fast growers stayed fast, the dots would rise from left to right; they form a cloud.

What the numbers can't tell you
- Shares are in current prices
- A state's share moves with its prices as well as its output; a state whose prices rose faster gains share without producing more.
- State GDP is estimated late and revised
- State statistics offices publish GSDP a year or more after the year ends and revise it for several years. The latest year is printed for most states, not all, which is why shares stop at the last year nine in ten states report.
- One base, 2011-12
- Shares and growth are on the 2011-12 base throughout; growth is never computed across a change of base. MoSPI's newer national base (2022-23) has no state series yet.
- Three recent years are few
- The recent average covers FY23 to FY25, three years, one of them a recovery year. A single good harvest or large project can move a smaller state's average.
