Many accounts, very different holdings
In Aug 2026, NSDL had 19.6% of the accounts at India's two depositories, but 85.8% of the reported value of securities. Account counts and the money held tell different stories.
Written for anyone following the growth of demat accounts and the securities held in them. Data to Aug 2026.
An account is not a person
A person can have several demat accounts. Companies, mutual funds and other institutions also have accounts, often holding far more than individuals. These reports count accounts that have not been closed.
Accounts at the two depositories
Month end, since April 2015.
How to read it. The two lines count accounts, including accounts with little or no equity. They cannot be added to produce a count of unique investors.

NSDL's share of accounts and securities held
Each share uses the combined total at NSDL and CDSL.
How to read it. Custody includes equity, debt, fund units and other securities, including institutional and corporate holdings. A larger share of custody does not imply more individual investors.

How much equity sits in an account?
Divide each category's equity value by all its non-closed accounts. This is an average across accounts, including empty ones. It tells us neither the typical investor's wealth nor their investment return.
Equity per account, within each source category
The source categories are kept separate.
How to read it. NSDL's Resident category and CDSL's Individual category are not a harmonised household universe. Changes reflect share prices, account openings, transfers and changes in holdings.

Are holdings keeping up with account growth?
For CDSL's Individual category in Aug 2026, accounts grew 17.1% over the same month a year earlier and equity held grew 13.8%. Equity per account changed −2.8%.
CDSL Individual: account growth and equity growth
Change from the exact month twelve months earlier.
How to read it. When accounts grow faster than equity value, the average value per account falls. This comparison does not follow a fixed group of investors.

What CDSL Individual accounts hold
Reported equity and mutual-fund units in demat.
How to read it. Mutual funds held outside demat are absent. This is a view of CDSL accounts, rather than all household financial assets or the mutual-fund industry's total AUM.

Who holds the equity?
A category's share of equity can differ sharply from its share of accounts. The denominator here is all equity held at that depository, rather than the market capitalisation of listed Indian companies.
CDSL: equity by investor category
Actual quarter-end observations, plus Aug 2026. No values filled in.
How to read it. Corporate accounts can hold large stakes in other companies. Their share should not be read as institutional trading activity.

The gaps stay visible
Dates printed inside the files govern the reference month. We retain the downloaded originals, their URLs and hashes, and check the report structure, account counts and any printed totals before publishing.
- CDSL: 137 reported months, Apr 2015 to Aug 2026. Missing reference months: none.
- NSDL: 136 reported months, Apr 2015 to Aug 2026. Missing reference months: 2024-04.
NSDL, Jan 2023: equity and debt values withheld after an adjacent-month consistency check. Accounts, fund units and other securities are retained. Original values are preserved for review.
NSDL, May 2026, Resident: equity value withheld pending review of an isolated jump in the original report. Accounts and other asset values are retained; totals and shares depending on that equity value are missing.
The quarterly overview selects actual quarter-end observations and the latest reported month. It does not estimate a missing month. Switch to Every month for the full timeline with labelled exclusions; monthly line charts also preserve every gap.
