Written for anyone who wants to know which parts of India's economy are growing, and which are not. GDP to Q1 FY27 (April to June 2026).

This quarter

Growth of each sector's real output on a year earlier. Finance, real estate and professional services led at 12.1%, against 8.8% a year before. Services as a whole grew 10.0%, industry 7.7% and agriculture 3.6%.

Real output growth by sector, Q1 FY27 and a year earlier

Growth of real gross value added on the same quarter a year earlier, new base.

How to read it. Each pair of bars is one sector, this quarter against the same quarter last year. Bars to the left are sectors that shrank.

What added most

A sector's contribution is its growth times its share of output a year earlier, so a big sector growing modestly can add more than a small one growing fast. Services are 55% of output and added 5.4 points in Q1 FY27. Over the last four quarters finance and real estate, together with trade and transport, did 54% of the growing.

What each sector added to output growth

Percentage points of real GVA growth, quarterly from Q1 FY24, new base. The bars add up to output growth.

How to read it. In Q1 FY27 the largest block was finance, real estate and professional services (3.2 points), then trade, hotels, transport and communication (1.3 points).

Each sector over time

Growth of each sector since 2012, on the old base until Q1 FY24 and the new base after. The lines break at the join, because the new base measures several sectors differently: manufacturing, for one, is now measured with separate price indices for inputs and output.

Real growth by sector, both bases

Growth on a year earlier, quarterly. Each panel has its own scale. The lockdown quarters, Q1 FY21 to Q1 FY23, are left blank.

How to read it. Compare a sector with its own past, not panels with each other: the scales differ. Outside the lockdowns, mining and manufacturing swing most, and trade and transport moves least.
