Where is foreign money going in India?
In the fortnight to 30 Sept 2026, foreign portfolio investors took ₹21,745 crore out of Indian equities and pulled ₹13,065 crore from debt. Over the last twelve months they sold a net ₹2.72 lakh crore of equities and bought ₹0.68 lakh crore of debt. They still hold ₹66.17 lakh crore of Indian equities, most of it gained in price rather than put in.
Written for anyone who reads 'FIIs sold' in the morning paper and wants to see what, how much and how unusual it is. Data to 30 Sept 2026.
How much foreign money came in, and into what
NSDL collects every foreign portfolio investor's trades from their custodians and publishes the net, purchases minus sales, in shares, bonds and funds. These are its fortnightly figures since January 2012, added into months and financial years. Equity carries the headlines, but debt flows have been as large in many years, and since India's government bonds entered global bond indices they arrive through a route of their own.

Net investment in equities, monthly
NSDL, primary and secondary market, the sum of two fortnights.
How to read it. Columns above zero are months of net buying. Runs matter more than single months: a long red stretch is a sustained exit, which domestic funds have had to absorb.

Net investment in debt, monthly
All routes: the general limit, the voluntary retention route (VRR, from 2019) and the fully accessible route (FAR, reported from September 2024).
How to read it. Columns above zero are months of net buying. The run of buying from late 2023 spans India's inclusion in JP Morgan's emerging-market bond index, which began in June 2024; FAR bonds, the ones that index holds, are reported separately from September 2024 (see the debt chapter).

Cumulative net equity investment since January 2012, in dollars
Each fortnight converted by NSDL at the period-end RBI reference rate.
How to read it. Measured in dollars, foreign investors have put a net $69.9 billion into Indian equities since 2012. The line peaked at $128.3 billion in Sept 2024; the fall since, $58.4 billion, is the size of the exit in the currency most of them count in.

What they hold, and how much of it is price
At the end of each fortnight NSDL also reports what foreign investors hold, at market value. Since January 2012 that equity book has grown from ₹8.94 lakh crore to ₹66.17 lakh crore ($689.4 billion). Net buying accounts for ₹3.18 lakh crore of that; the other ₹54.06 lakh crore is the rise in the price of what they own.
Foreign investors' equity holdings
Assets under custody at the fortnight's end, market value.
How to read it. The line moves mostly with the market, which is why a large holding can shrink in a sell-off with little actual selling. Set it against the cumulative flow line above.

The fortnightly return on foreign investors' equity holdings
Implied by NSDL's own numbers: the change in holdings less the net investment, over the opening holdings. Correlation with the Nifty 500 total return over the same fortnights: 0.98.
How to read it. A check as much as a chart: it tracks the broad market closely, so the holdings and flow figures hang together. Gaps are corporate actions and companies entering or leaving FPI books.

Which sectors they bought and sold
The same report splits flows and holdings by sector. In the twelve months to 30 Sept 2026 foreign investors sold most heavily in financial services (₹1,15,868 crore), fast moving consumer goods (₹50,692 crore), automobile and auto components (₹39,542 crore), and bought most in metals & mining (₹22,459 crore), capital goods (₹14,763 crore), other companies (₹10,224 crore). Financial Services is their largest holding by far, 30% of the equity they own.

Net equity investment by sector, last 12 months
Twelve months to 30 Sept 2026.
How to read it. Size here partly reflects how much they own: selling a little of a large holding shows up as a big bar. The table below scales each flow by the holding a year ago.

How their portfolio has shifted
What foreign investors own changes through buying and selling and through prices. Over the last year capital goods gained the most share of their equity book (+1.8 pts) and information technology lost the most (−1.5 pts). Over the longer run, since March 2018, industrials rose from 7% to 12% of what they hold, and information technology fell from 11% to 5%.
Share of foreign investors' equity holdings by sector
Current sector list, Sovereign excluded.
How to read it. Each line runs from a year ago to now. A sector's share rises when its prices outrun the rest or foreign investors buy it, so read it with the flows above.

Share of foreign investors' equity holdings by broad group, since March 2018
Before March 2018 NSDL left about a fifth of FPI equity unclassified, so earlier shares are not comparable. NSDL used its own sector list until April 2022 and the exchanges' since; both are mapped into these groups, so small steps at that change are classification, not trading.
How to read it. Financials are the largest holding throughout, at 30% now. Look for the slow drifts: those are where years of buying and of relative prices have moved foreign money.

Stock by stock: who they added and who they cut
NSDL does not publish foreign holdings by company, but every listed company files its shareholding each quarter. Among the 496 largest companies, foreign institutions raised their stake in 213 and cut it in 281 between Mar 2026 and Jun 2026. The largest cut by value was in HDFC Bank Limited (about ₹27,283 crore); the largest addition was in Shriram Finance Limited (about ₹23,589 crore).

Foreign institutions' share of listed companies' market value
Weighted by market cap, every company that filed, quarters where most had filed.
How to read it. From 17.6% to 16.0% over the quarters shown. A falling share can mean selling or simply that the stocks foreigners own did worse than the rest.

Foreign institutions are FPIs plus other foreign institutional holders, as each company classifies them. A stake also moves when a company issues or buys back shares. Source: NSE shareholding-pattern filings (XBRL); quarter-end prices from NSE. JSON.
Debt: government bonds, corporate bonds and the limits
Foreign investors hold ₹3.91 lakh crore of Indian government debt and ₹2.88 lakh crore of other debt (corporate bonds and debt NSDL could not assign to a sector). Since Aug 2024 NSDL has reported holdings through the fully accessible route (FAR), the index-eligible government bonds with no investment limit: ₹3.25 lakh crore now. Bonds outside FAR count against limits, and NSDL's daily page shows how little of them is used: 27.7% of the corporate-bond limit and 14.9% of the general limit for central government securities on 5 Oct 2026.
Foreign investors' debt holdings
Assets under custody, fortnightly. 'Sovereign' is NSDL's row for central and state government securities and T-bills.
How to read it. Since January 2023 government holdings went from ₹1.37 lakh crore to ₹3.91 lakh crore, and other debt from ₹2.41 lakh crore to ₹2.88 lakh crore. Holdings are at market value, so falling bond yields lift them as well as buying.

Do foreign investors chase sectors?
A common reading of FPI sector flows is that they lead: watch where foreign money goes and the sector follows. We wrote down the test before running it. In each fortnight we rank sectors by how much foreign investors bought relative to what they held, and compare that with the sectors' returns before and after. They chase: sectors that did well in one fortnight drew more foreign buying in the next (average rank correlation 0.19, t 13.7). Their flows say nothing useful about which sectors do better next.

How to read it. A positive correlation with the previous fortnight means money follows recent winners. A correlation with the next fortnights would mean flows anticipate returns; the fortnight after next is the first one an outsider could act on, since NSDL publishes each report a few days after the fortnight ends. Returns are those implied by foreign investors' own holdings, not an index. Pre-registered as C9: specification and results log. JSON.
