How the state readings are built
The States dimension asks which of India’s larger states are pulling ahead. It sets them side by side on seven readings and counts, for each state, on how many it is ahead of the median state. It makes no forecast and no composite score beyond that count.
Code: compute/economy_states.py, publish/economy_states.py, steps/economy_states.py. Bundles: economy/states/facts, economy/states/table. Tests: pipeline/tests/test_economy_states.py. Page: /economy/states/; state inflation in more detail on /economy/prices/states/.
Which states
The states that each produced at least 1% of all states’ nominal GSDP in the latest year that nine in ten states report, largest first. Smaller states and union territories are left out of the table, not because they matter less, but because their monthly readings swing on small numbers. Every source spells states its own way (“Madhya Pr.”, “MP”, “UT of DNH and DD”); each name is reduced to one code (slug and ALIASES), and the page prints one name for it.
The readings
All are Government of India or RBI publications, used with attribution; GSDP levels are RBI’s compilation, so the page shows only growth and shares derived from them.
- Real GSDP growth: RBI’s Handbook of Statistics on Indian States, tables 21 and 22 (DBIE reports 1575 and 1576), from MoSPI and state statistics offices. Growth at constant prices in the latest year printed for at least four in five of the table’s states, on the newest base each state has (2011-12; growth is never computed across a change of base), and the average of the three years to it.
- Monthly readings: GST collected in the state (CGST, SGST, IGST and cess; GSTN), e-way bills generated for supplies within and out of the state (GSTN), electricity demand met (Grid-India daily reports, months with every day reported), vehicle registrations (VAHAN, complete months) and UPI payments by the payer’s state (NPCI, from April 2023). Each is the latest three months held, against the same three months a year earlier. A month counts only when at least four in five states report it.
- Consumer inflation: MoSPI’s combined (rural and urban) CPI by state, base 2024, latest month, % on a year earlier.
Guards
A state whose three-month window holds a month more than two and a half times its median of the twelve months before (or less than two-fifths of it) is left blank for that reading and named on the page. On 25 October 2026 this held back Assam’s GST, whose August 2026 collection was 2.8 times its usual month. The count of readings above the median uses GSDP and the five monthly readings, not inflation; the page shades inflation red where it is more than half a point above the median state.
What the numbers cannot tell
These readings are not state GDP. GST is collected where the supplier is registered, e-way bills follow goods rather than value added, UPI counts the payer’s state and vehicles the state of registration. Being ahead of the median ranks states against each other; it is not a measure of how fast any of them grows.
