BSE adds Vedanta Aluminium to key indices, drops GSM-flagged stocks from Aug 4

Vedanta Aluminium enters ALLCAP, LARGECAP, LARGEMIDCAP, and COMMODITIES. Three GSM-listed stocks are removed from multiple indices, forcing passive funds to rebalance.

21 Jul 2026 Effective August 4, 2026 Affects: Index fund managers and ETF providers tracking BSE indices: ALLCAP, LARGECAP, LARGEMIDCAP, COMMODITIES, SMALLCAP, CONSUMER DISCRETIONARY, MIDSMALLCAP, UTILITIES, CPSE, FINANCIAL SERVICES.

What changed

  • Vedanta Aluminium Metal added to BSE ALLCAP, LARGECAP, LARGEMIDCAP, and COMMODITIES indices.
  • Aqylon Nexus, GVK Power & Infrastructure, and BEML Land Assets dropped from indices due to GSM listing.
  • All changes effective at market open on August 4, 2026.

The read

BSE's index arm has reshuffled its benchmarks. Vedanta Aluminium Metal enters four indices (ALLCAP, LARGECAP, LARGEMIDCAP, and COMMODITIES), while Aqylon Nexus, GVK Power & Infrastructure, and BEML Land Assets exit multiple indices because they sit on the GSM list. The move follows a methodology change (notice no. 20251029-21) that bars GSM-listed stocks from BSE indices. Passive funds tracking these benchmarks must rebalance by August 4, creating forced buying in Vedanta Aluminium and selling in the eliminated names. GSM exclusion is the sharper edge: BSE is tightening the screws on illiquid stocks by removing them from index constituents, a penalty that goes beyond trading restrictions.
