Kotak Mahindra Bank's NIM guidance flip-flop erodes credibility

Six months ago management guided for a moderate NIM increase in Q4. This quarter NIM was flat and they refused to provide any guidance, with no explanation for the reversal.

Management consistency flag
In Jan 2026, management guided for a moderate NIM increase in Q4 FY26 citing deposit repricing and CRR benefit. In Jul 2026, NIM was flat at 4.53% and they declined to give any forward NIM guidance, stating it's 'very difficult to give guidance'. No explanation was provided for the failed projection.

What's new

  • Q1 FY27 PAT ₹4,123 cr, up 26% YoY; operating profit ₹6,131 cr, up 10%.
  • NIM flat at 4.53%; net interest income up 9% YoY.
  • Credit cost rose to 46 bps from 39 bps QoQ; ECL implementation to add 12-15 bps.
  • Deutsche Bank retail acquisition announced for ₹281 cr, close scheduled Sept 2027.

Themes from the call

Margins

NIM remained flat at 4.53% despite prior guidance for a Q4 increase; management now refuses to provide any forward NIM guidance.

Credit quality

Credit cost ticked up to 46 bps from 39 bps QoQ, driven by CV/tractor slippages; management earlier said unsecured credit cost was behind them.

Strategy

Inorganic philosophy expanded: Deutsche Bank acquisition announced just six months after management outlined a highly selective, bandwidth-constrained M&A framework.

Guidance watch

  • ECL implementation to add 12-15 bps to credit cost; one-time net worth impact under 2%.
  • Deutsche Bank acquisition expected ROE accretive; close Sept 2027.
  • Management refused to provide NIM guidance, CV segment growth targets, or segment-level profitability.

Risk flags

  • NIM guidance reversal without explanation undermines trust in forward projections.
  • Credit cost trajectory shifted from declining to rising, with new stress in CV/tractor and ECL overhang.
  • Deposit growth moderation and weaker current account growth driven by capital market headwinds not flagged earlier.

Key quotes

  • "I think we will see a moderate increase in Q4 NIM, as I explained...we expect the repricing to get completed by Q1 of the next year."
    — Management, Jan 2026 call
  • "We do not give any guidance regarding Kotak's NIM. As Devang said, Q3, Q4, and Q1 have largely been flat. It is very difficult to give guidance with all that is going on."
    — Management, Jul 2026 call

The brief

Kotak Mahindra Bank reported a solid Q1 FY27 – PAT up 26% YoY to ₹4,123 cr, operating profit up 10%, and credit costs halved from a year ago to 46 bps. The headline numbers look strong. But the concall was dominated by what management did not say and what it had said before.

Six months ago the bank guided for a moderate NIM increase in Q4 FY26, citing deposit repricing and a full-quarter CRR benefit. This quarter NIM was flat at 4.53% – no improvement – and management flatly refused to provide any forward NIM guidance, saying it is 'very difficult to give guidance with all that is going on.' The reversal was neither acknowledged nor explained.

The pattern extends to credit costs. In January, management claimed 'the unsecured credit cost is behind us now' and guided for a gradual decline. Instead, credit cost ticked up to 46 bps from 39 bps sequentially, and the increase was blamed on commercial vehicle and tractor portfolios – a segment not flagged as a risk six months ago. The pending ECL implementation will add another 12-15 bps.

Deposit growth also moderated. In the prior call, management said current account balances grew 8% sequentially and expressed confidence in the granular deposit strategy. This quarter, current account growth was hit by weaker capital market activity – a headwind that was not mentioned before.

On the positive side, the Deutsche Bank retail acquisition at ₹281 cr looks well-priced and strategically sensible for the affluent and SME franchises. Capital adequacy remains high at 22.2%, and ROA improved to 2.14%.

But the credibility of management's guidance is now an open question. Three material projections – on NIM, credit costs, and deposit growth – have shifted direction or been abandoned within six months, without an accompanying narrative. Until the bank rebuilds the trust that guidance will be both given and delivered, the market is right to discount forward promises.

The take

Kotak delivered strong earnings but weaker guidance credibility. Three reversals in six months demand a 'why' – and it wasn't provided.
