Risk flags

The brief
Heritage Foods reported a record quarter but with a guidance contradiction at its center. The ice cream facility, a flagship growth project, reached 40% capacity utilization in its first quarter. In January, management said it expected 40 to 45% in the first year. Hitting the bottom of that range is not the same as hitting the range, but management presented it as a success without acknowledging the missing top end. The miss is small, but the selective framing is a pattern. The company's mini flush outlook also unravelled. In May, management hoped the cow flush would soften prices; by July, the flush had not materialised and prices rose further. The numbers otherwise are strong. VAP revenue jumped 40% to ₹5,636 cr, now nearly half of total revenue. Ice cream alone crossed ₹550 cr, up 65% YoY, and Get-Away nears break-even. Liquid milk volumes, however, are flat, the main problem as management itself called it. EBITDA margin compressed to 4.6%. VAP margin fell 164 basis points to 8.06%. The trough narrative is plausible, but the guidance slippage on ice cream and flush raises the bar for credibility. Heritage needs to show that the next facility milestone, not the floor of the range, is what investors should watch.
A record quarter, yes, but guided milestones are slipping. The flush didn't flush and the ice cream facility hit only the low end.
