Mahindra Logistics turnaround real, but freight forwarding flip leaves a hole

Q1 profit of ₹25.4 cr confirms recovery in contract logistics and express, but freight forwarding slid from 33% growth to 39% drop without credible explanation.

The numbers

  • Net profit swung to ₹25.39 cr in Q1 FY27 from a ₹10.80 cr loss a year ago, ending a losing streak.
  • Revenue climbed 23% to ₹2,002.88 cr, led by supply chain management and enterprise mobility.
  • Contract logistics revenue grew 26% YoY, though its gross margin slipped 46 bps on ramp-up costs.
  • B2B express narrowed its EBITDA loss to ₹1.6 cr from ₹11.8 cr, with gross margins turning positive.

Management's story

  • Management framed the quarter as proof of disciplined execution, with a clear yield-over-volume focus in express.
  • Guidance targets B2B express turning EBITDA positive during FY27, with no specific quarter committed.
  • White-space reduction target of 95% by September 2026 is a specific, prepared milestone.
  • Medium-term gross margin to widen by 150-200 bps, extracted under Q&A.

“Our objective is not to maximize volume and make losses. Our objective is to turn around this business.”

— Hemant Sikka, MD & CEO

Where they diverge

The turnaround in contract logistics and B2B express is real and supported by the numbers. But freight forwarding revenue reversed from 33% growth in January to a 39% drop in July, blamed on customer attrition and a geopolitical crisis. Management did not reconcile why the earlier narrative of diversified customers and improved trade flows was wrong. That silence is the hole in an otherwise solid quarter.

The full read

Mahindra Logistics has decisively exited red ink. The Q1 FY27 net profit of ₹25.39 crore, against a ₹10.80 crore loss last year, and a 23% revenue jump to ₹2,002.88 crore, are clean wins. The B2B express business is on the cusp of breakeven, contract logistics is adding marquee clients, and management's yield-over-volume discipline is producing results. The auditor gave an unmodified report. Yet the freight forwarding segment reversed course in six months. In January, revenue grew 33% on what management called improved trade flows and a diversified customer base. This quarter, revenue fell 39% to ₹45 crore, blamed on customer attrition during a transition and a geopolitical crisis. Management offered no bridge between the two narratives. The rest of the business is turning around, but that hole in the story needs to be filled before the turnaround is complete.

What we're watching

  • Freight forwarding revenue trends in Q2 FY27 — any recovery or further erosion.
  • B2B express EBITDA positivity: which quarter does it actually hit?
  • White-space reduction progress: will 95% target be met by Sep 2026?
  • Contract logistics gross margin: does the 46 bps squeeze widen or reverse as ramp-ups mature?
