What’s new

EC committee recommends environmental clearance for Belkundi iron and manganese mine after prior delisting.

Proposed capacity: 1.8 MTPA iron ore and 0.3 MTPA manganese ore across 965.423 hectares.

Orissa Minerals currently operates only Bagiaburu mine, which posted ₹94.10 cr revenue and ₹2.91 cr net loss in FY26.

Why it matters

The Belkundi mine dwarfs the company's sole active operation. If cleared, it could multiply production manifold and flip the company from loss-making to profitable. But conditions — a lease extension beyond August 2026, a pending Supreme Court ruling, and a bank guarantee — mean near-term impact is uncertain.

What we’re watching

Final EC grant and mining lease extension beyond August 2026.

Supreme Court ruling on the matter.

Execution of bank guarantee and timeline to production.

The full read

The Orissa Minerals Development Company has cleared the biggest regulatory hurdle for its Belkundi mine. The Expert Appraisal Committee recommended environmental clearance for the iron and manganese ore project, the first major headway since its original EC proposal was delisted in May 2025. The mine is designed for 1.8 MTPA of iron ore and 0.3 MTPA of manganese ore, a scale that dwarfs the company's sole active mine, Bagiaburu, which produced just ₹94.10 crore in revenue and a ₹2.91 crore net loss in FY26. The recommendation is a clear positive, but it comes with strings: the mining lease must be extended beyond August 2026, a Supreme Court ruling is pending, and a bank guarantee must be executed. These conditions temper the immediate financial upside. For a company with negative net worth, the Belkundi mine is existential. The EC nod is a step forward, but the real test is execution under conditions.
