India's first GLP-1 receptor agonist cleared for non-cirrhotic MASH with moderate to advanced fibrosis. Poviztra adds a major new indication to its existing approvals for weight management, CVD, and adolescent obesity.

What’s new

CDSCO approved Emcure's Poviztra for non-cirrhotic MASH in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis.

First GLP-1 receptor agonist cleared in India for this progressive liver condition.

Approval backed by Phase III ESSENCE trial: 63% resolved steatohepatitis, 37% improved fibrosis.

Why it matters

MASH, closely linked to obesity and diabetes, is a growing unmet need. Emcure, with its existing gastroenterology network via Juventus Healthcare, is now the only mid-cap pharma in India offering a proven GLP-1 therapy for this indication, facing limited competition and a large addressable patient pool.

What we’re watching

How fast Emcure expands diagnosis and awareness campaigns through its gastro network.

Pricing strategy for Poviztra in MASH vs existing weight-loss indications.

Competitive response from other GLP-1 players entering the Indian market.

The full read

Emcure Pharmaceuticals has secured CDSCO approval for Poviztra (semaglutide) to treat non-cirrhotic MASH in adults with moderate to advanced liver fibrosis. That makes it the first GLP-1 receptor agonist cleared in India for this progressive liver disease—a condition closely tied to obesity and diabetes, both booming in the country. The nod rests on the Phase III ESSENCE trial, where 63% of patients resolved steatohepatitis and 37% saw fibrosis improvement. For Emcure (market cap ₹35,664 cr), the expanded label is a material lift. It already sells Poviztra for weight management, CVD, and adolescent obesity. The MASH indication lets it tap into a large, underserved pool using its existing gastroenterology network via Juventus Healthcare. With limited competition in India for a GLP-1 in this space, the approval strengthens Emcure's specialty portfolio and growth outlook.
